Mitchell whips Polk County on Thursday Night Lights
Columbus - Mitchell breaks a 7-7 tie in the second quarter and rolls to a 25-7 win on the road at Polk on Thursday Night Lights on MY 40. The win gives the 8th ranked Mountaineers a 2-1 Western Highlands Conference record while Polk drops to 2-1. Mitchell is 8-1 overall while the Wolverines drop to 6-3.
Mitchell struck first when Ben Young hit Jesse Pittman in the corner of the endzone from 10 yards out with 8 minutes to go in the period. Polk answered using a fake punt on fourth and 10 from their own 15 yard line. Dillon Oberholt , playing the upback, took the snap and ran 45 yards to the Mitchell 40. A few plays later Elijah Sutton takes a pitch from Overholt and goes 30 yards for the tying touchdown.
In the second quarter Mitchell gets a 15 yard touchdown run from Ben Robinson with 3 minutes left to give the Mounaineers a 13-7 lead. They missed the extra point.
The second half was all Mountaineers. Ben Young scored from 16 yards out with 3 minutes left in the third quarter to give Mitchell a 19-7 lead, they again missed the point after. Noah Pittman added a four yard touchdown run with a minute to go in the period to finish the scoring. Mitchell had the ball for 16 minutes in the second half compared to Polk County's 8 minutes.
For the game Ben Young rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown passed for 134 more and threw for a t.d. Mitcjhell rushed for 312 yards. Next week Mitchell hosts Avery while Polk County travels to Mountain Heritage.
