Callista Rice is a special type of student athlete who has displayed a tremendous amount of talent this year. As Luke Notestine found out, this Game Changer has ambitious goals on the golf course and in the classroom. Plus, she keeps everything in perspective.
Callista Rice is one of the best golfers in the mountains.
Callista says, "It's been a great season. I didn't realize how successful it would be."
Callista has been a medalist in every match she's played this season. She also had the lowest 9-hole average among her peers with a 35. By the way, she's only a freshman at North Buncombe High School.
Callista says, "I was Player of the Year and I'm looking forward to States. After that, I'll continue this through high school. I want to go to college on a golf scholarship, and a partial academic scholarship."
She compares making a long putt to getting an 'A' in the classroom. So far, she has earned Straight A's.
Callista says, "Colleges always look for grades. They want you to have the good GPA. Also, not only that, volunteer work. If you're a smart student, they want a smart student who can balance your school work and your sport."
Luke Notestine says, "Callista spends a lot of time on the practice range, the putting green, and getting her game where she wants it. She also spends a lot of time doing schoolwork. But she never takes it too seriously as you can tell by this Scooby-Doo head cover.
Callista says, "It's relaxing even though my friends give me a hard time about it."
Her grandfather, Roger Buckner is also the Golf Coach at North Buncombe.
Roger Buckner says, "She projects a good image and represents her family and her school very well."
Callista will play in the State Golf Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Firefox near Pinehurst.
