Rob Wilcher played college soccer at App State and has a great knowledge of the beautiful game. Now, he's one of the most accomplished coaches in the state of North Carolina. Luke Notestine caught up with this week's game changer to see why Wilcher is still so passionate about his favorite sport.
On Tuesday night, Roberson defeated Tuscola 8-1 to give Wilcher his 400th career win at Roberson as Head Coach of the boys program. He also has 392 wins with the girls. All of his players are honored to be a part of history.
Roberson Senior Defender, Jonah Hodes, says "Roberson is a great tradition for soccer, so just coming here has been amazing. To be a part of the 400th win is awesome as well."
Wilcher has been named National Coach of the Year twice during his time at Roberson. He's won 2 state titles with the boys program, and has led the girls to 6 state championship games.
Wilcher says the main thing you want with high school sports is to give the players that life-long love for the game, no matter what sport it is. Also making them better citizens is a major goal.
The Roberson soccer team has made it to the state semifinals each of the past 2 seasons, but they haven't been able to bring home a title. They've been working extra hard on their fundamentals, trying to get everything squared up, so they can run the table this year and try to bring home another state championship.
Roberson Senior Forward, Austin Stamey, thinks this just may be their season. He says, "I think this team wants it the most out of any of the 4 years I've been here."
The Roberson boys team is 6-0 this season. They're determined to give Rob Wilcher his 3rd state title later this year.
