Summer camps are fun, but they serve a bigger purpose for athletes.

UNC Asheville Women's Basketball Camp, this week's Game Changer, highlights the real point of these summer staples -- recruiting.

The summer time allows UNCA women's basketball coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick to rekindle her passion for the game.

"Camp totally recharges you as a coach. It gives you new energy. The kids bring their own energy, and it's contagious," Mock Kirkpatrick said. "It's really cool to see our own players working with the younger kids."

The school's summer camps have become a lifeline for recruiting.

"Seven of our players on the roster last year came to one of these camps. Camp is a huge recruiting tool for our program, as well," Mock Kirkpatrick explained.

One of those players is Jessica Wall, the Bulldog's point guard who's got three conference championship rings.

"I definitely remember meeting all the players and the coaches," Wall told News 13. "I actually came to camp with some of my future teammates which I did not know at the time."

The campers say they can't wait to get to Kimmel Arena.

"I decided to come to the UNC Asheville camp because I've been trying to work on my game, trying to get it up, trying to step up, trying to be a leader at my school," camper Frances Holladay said. "It's just a really friendly environment."

"Those are some of the most rewarding things -- seeing our players work with some of the younger kids and seeing how those kids look up to our players, and how much they mean to them in the community," Mock Kirkpatrick said.

Recruiting never stops for Coach Mock, and she never stops enjoying the process.
