WCU baseball coach goes down in program history with record number of wins
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (WLOS) —
Western Carolina's baseball team is going for its second straight SoCon Tournament title this week in Greenville. But no matter what happens this week, head coach Bobby Moranda has already put his name among WCU coaching legends.
"It's my 31st year of coaching, and it's crazy. It's always an adventure," Moranda said. "It's always something new. With baseball, you never quite know what's going to happen."
On April 22, something big happened. Moranda earned career win number 303, passing the legendary Jack Leggett for the most wins in program history.
Leggett just happens to be one of Moranda's mentors.
"So, to have that accomplishment, and to have it be Jack Leggett, with the tradition of our program and what that means, and to have Jack there that day was pretty cool," Moranda said. "The whole thing was amazing, absolutely amazing."
After more than three decades of coaching, Bobby Moranda said he still enjoys the process, the challenges and especially the relationships he's formed over the years.
"The relationships for sure. It sounds corny, but there's no doubt about it," he said. "Championships and winning, stuff like that is cool, but the relationships are a lifetime and that's awesome."
The Catamounts are a consistent force in the Southern Conference, and they're hoping to earn their second straight tournament championship this season with Moranda at the helm.
