Meteor Strike

A huge meteor that exploded over Russia sends a shock wave so powerful that it shattered windows in thousands of buildings.

Astronomers at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute in Transylvania County say the meteor was probably 50 feet wide and weighed 40 tons. They say the angle the meteor fell at gave it a long time to burn in the atmosphere. Its weight and speed created a huge pressure wave. When it exploded, it crumbled walls at a Zinc plant.

Unlike the much larger asteroid cruising by earth, the meteor was a complete surprise. Astronomers say the meteor was unrelated to the asteroid because they had two different paths as they approached earth. They plan to take pictures of the asteroid moving away from earth tonight if the sky is clear.
