Madison Co. Jail Escapees Captured

Three Madison County detention officers have been fired in the wake of a double escape Wednesday night from the detention center. Investigators say Jonathan Motte and Joseph Norton hopped a fence in an outdoor rec area around 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

They were recaptured Thursday afternoon after a foot chase in Mars Hill. Both were awaiting trial on felony burglary charges. The jail they escaped from is a brand new state-of-the-art facility.

A news release from the sheriff's office says this escape has pointed out a security flaw in the jail's design. Deputies say the security fence needs to be re-designed to keep prisoners on an outside walkway from climbing out. They'll look at ways to fix the problem and say one new policy has already be put in place.

Motte and Norton have been charged with jail-breaking and are under an additional $50,000 bond each.
