Smokey Or Smoky Park Highway?
Most people we talked to never gave the spelling of Smoky Park Highway a second thought.
"I learned soon after i got here, it was just with a 'Y'," said one Asheville woman.
But look up and down West Asheville and into Enka-Candler and you'll notice that signs with the word Smoky or Smokey, some of them business signs, don't seem to agree.
The spelling situation apparently goes back decades. The Pack Library in Downtown Asheville looked back to 1950 archives.
Experts say the state named the then Smoky Park Bridge, spelled just like Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The highway was intended to have the same spelling.
Buncombe county officially has the road spelled S-m-o-k-e-y in it's 9-1-1 addressing system. Just like the bear.
When we called the DOT to spell check, they told us to call the county. County officials told us to call the DOT. So it's unlikely the Smoky/Smokey discrepancy will go away anytime soon.
