Man Steals Fire Truck
Mitchell County Deputies arrest a Yancey County man who stole a fire truck. Matthew Ernest Miller, age 19, of Burnsville, N.C. faces misdemeanor and felony charges.
Captain R.V. Wiseman said on Monday deputies responded to Parkway Fire Station 21 on Altapass Road. Parkway Firefighter Kevin Hughes called and advised the station was missing a ladder truck.
Before deputies could arrive Hughes heard the sound of a siren coming down Humpback Mountain Road. Miller came down the road driving the ladder truck with lights and siren on. Hughes and another firefighter then blocked the ladder truck and stopped it.
Hughes approached the ladder truck and Miller jumped out of it. Hughes asked Miller what he was doing. Miller advised Hughes he was the State Marshall and was checking out their equipment.
Captain Wiseman and NCSHP Trooper Ben Young arrived. Captain Wiseman asked Miller what was going on. Miller advised Captain Wiseman he was a volunteer firefighter from Burnsville. He took the ladder truck up to PRC because of a fire alarm. Captain Wiseman asked Miller if he told Hughes he was the State Fire Marshall. Miller replied he did.
Sheriff Donald Street and Deputy S.E. Davis arrived. The plant managers from PRC then met with the Sheriff at the scene. They advised Miller was an employee of PRC and had left work sick. The next thing they knew he came to the plant driving the ladder truck with lights and siren on. Miller told the management there was a fire alarm at the plant. Management contacted their alarm company, who advised they were not a fire alarm at the plant.
Miller then left in the ladder truck with lights and siren on traveling back towards Parkway Station 21.
Deputy Davis then took Miller into custody.
Arrest warrants were issued on Miller for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, felony operation of red lights and siren, and impersonating a fireman.
Miller is being held on a $11,000.00 secured bond.
Tuesday Parkway Fire Station officials did not return calls for comment.
