I-26 Bridge Work Update
Fridays typically mean back-ups on I-26 in Asheville, especially near "malfunction junction." The interchange has been living up to its name over the past couple of weeks. But, the bridge work at "malfunction junction" is virtually complete. That means one less delay for drivers this weekend.
Drivers traveling I-26 West don't have to be on the lookout for those D.O.T. warning signs, at least during the day. The left lane approaching the I-26 overpass reopened Tuesday night. Those daytime lane closures for the project are now over.
D.O.T. Resident Engineer, Randy McKinney, says there's a few final touches to be completed on the bridge repair, but this will take place during overnight hours. Crews will complete this work by 6 a.m. each morning, so many drivers won't be affected by it. He says now that the daytime work is complete, drivers should only face the typical rush-hour congestion.
Last Friday, traffic was stop-and-go from noon until at least 10:00 that night. Sitting in traffic for hours delayed many locals and even tourists.
With the cold snap we're facing now, the fall leaf colors are expected to really pop this weekend. This could mean even more tourists making their way to Asheville. But if drivers see gridlock like last weekend, it won't be because of the bridge work.
