French Broad Bacteria Levels Safe

State tests show bacteria levels are nearly back to normal in the French Broad River days after a huge sewage spill.

MSD says almost 6 million gallons of untreated sewage emptied into the river after a valve broke at the plant on Tuesday. Engineers believe the contamination has already left the state.

State officials said people can get back to boating and fishing in the river. Good news for one local rafting and tubing business owner. Heath White, owner of Huck Finn Rafting and Zen Tubing, says he hasn't had one customer inquire about the water quality.

The sewage district says heavy rain and a fast moving river helped wash the sewage downtstream.

State officials haven't said what, if any, fines MSD could face.
