Woman Burns Church Cross

An Etowah woman faces a felony arson charge after lighting a cross on fire outside a church in the Etowah Shopping Center.  Security cameras at a neighboring business captured the woman in the act.  Deputies have charged 58-year old Rebecca Eaton of Etowah for trying to burn a church building after she admitted to setting the fire.

Eaton made her first court appearance this morning in Henderson County court.  Her case has been scheduled for June 7th.  Eaton is being held in the county detention center under a 10-thousand dollar bond.

Employees in the shopping center say they've seen Eaton roaming the plaza in the past and wondered about her  mental health. The pastor of Life Spring Weslyan Church says it's unfortunate it happened.  He says Eaton needs medical help and only wishes the best for her.

Investigators wouldn't comment on Eaton's mental health but people around the plaza who know her say she was definitely having mental issues.
