Caught on Cam: Cops Parking Illegally
A months long investigation by News 13's Mario Boone revealed Asheville police officers and Buncombe County sheriff's deputies illegally parking their patrol cars at metered parking spaces downtown without paying. News 13 cameras caught multiple cops repeatedly ignoring parking meters at spaces around the Buncombe County Courthouse.
Top Brass at APD and city leaders declined to go on camera, however, representatives from both camps released statements clarifying that police have to pay to park unless they're responding to a call. They also said officers who break parking laws should be ticketed like everyone else. It's unclear why tickets haven't issued by the Department of Parking Services.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office told Boone no one was available Wednesday to speak on the matter.First time parking meter violators face a $10 fine. It doubles for subsequent violations.
