Dog Kills Rabid Fox
A Buncombe County man has elected to undergo rabies treatments after his dog attacked and killed a rabid fox. It happened in a neighborhood off Sardis Road earlier this week. The pet owner is now being forced to put down their dog after animal control learned it's rabies shots were not up to date.
The dog attacked and killed the fox when the rabid animal came onto their property. The owner took the dog and fox to their veterinarian after becoming concerned about the rabies threat. Friday morning, animal control officers learned the fox tested positive for rabies. As a result, the dog must be quarantined for 6 months at the owners expense. Officials say the owner will probably elect to euthanize the dog because of the expense.
Health officials say the unfortunate outcome could have been prevented if the dog's vaccine was up to date. They're now warning residents throughout the county to be sure their pets vaccines are current. Buncombe county offers low cost vaccine clinics on the last Saturday of every month for just $10.
