Church Move Controversy
A mountain church hopes to attract more members by moving into town.
But not everyone is happy with that idea. The Father's House of Prayer is located on Highway 441 near Dillsboro right now.
Its pastor says he wants to move it to an empty building on Sylva’s Main Street.
Commissioners say that would require changing the town's zoning ordinance.
Right now it's an area for retail businesses and restaurants, but Pastor Doug Rowe says it's the right spot for an unconventional church.
He says, “And we desire the downtown area specifically because we're after that walk-in traffic.”
The owner of the Signature Brew Coffee Company, John Bubacz says he worries he might not be able to sell alcohol if the church moves in next door.
Other businesses signed a petition against the church over concerns about parking.
The issue goes to the planning board June 27th
