Renovations At Site Where Capt. Bowen Died

No matter how different it looks, we may never look at the building the same way.

"It is extremely exciting from the standpoint of the services it will allow us to provide," says VP of facilities, True Morse.

Workers are applying the finishing touches on a project that began in January. Mission Health's "1 Hospital Drive" moves forward, just two years after a dark day in Asheville.

"And it's exciting to see the scene of such a tragedy being turned into such a positive," says Morse.

Captain Jeff Bowen died in July of 2011 while searching for victims on the top floor.

Chief Scott Burnette says that same site is safer than ever now that it's been renovated.

"One very positive thing about reopening this building is it incorporates life safety features from 2013. The building is new fully sprinkled," Chief Burnette says.

There are plans for a Bowen memorial, possibly in the lobby.

"I think it's important to honor Captain Bowen in some way," Chief Burnette says.
