Swannanoa Motocross Track Controversy

Residents of a Buncombe County community speak out against a proposed motocross track planned in their community.

Some Swannanoa residents complain the loud motorcycles can be heard for miles. They told the County Planning Board to vote against changes in the zoning laws allowing the tracks in commercial areas of the county.

Motocross track supporters say they’re building the track for young dirt bike riders who need a safe place to practice. They say they have property that’s ideal for a track on Highway 70 in Swannanoa. They say the property is in an area that has a lot of noise now, with truck traffic, trains, and commercial businesses.

Residents in nearby Lyda Cove says the high-pitched bike noise will wind up reaching them.

The planning board deadlocked 4 to 4 in the vote on whether to allow tracks in commercial areas. The issue now goes to county commissioners later this month.
