Electronic License Plates

South Carolina may soon cut down your trips to the DMV and keep you safer on the road. A

A Columbia-based company makes electronic license plates that would update remotely when you pay your registration. The DMV can also send messages to the plates if tags expire or the car becomes uninsured. It can also alert other drivers if the car is stolen or was involved in a crime.

Drivers have mixed reactions on the idea. The tags are powered by vibrations in your car and solar power. The company says drivers and the state could save millions in lower insurance and recovered revenue.
