Train Plans Stall
Plans to bring a train from the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad back to Dillsboro appear to be stuck at the station.
Jackson County commissioners have offered the railroad a $700,000 loan to return. But the owner says he's going to focus on renovations on the train operation in Bryson City for now.
Commissioner Charles Elders says a Dillsboro train would bring in badly needed revenue, and says he still looks forward to that happening someday. He says, “It’s really not a closed deal…not over yet. We’re still very optimistic that it will be worked out in the future.”
In a letter to commissioners, railroad owner Allen Harper says the Dillsboro expansion could still happen at a later date.
