Howard Gap Road Sinkhole
Days of rain in Henderson County create a sinkhole on a major two-lane road and cause expensive washouts for homeowners with private drives. NCDOT inspectors closed Howard Gap Road Tuesday afternoon because of a sinkhole that threatened cars. It’s on a steep, curvy section near Park Ridge Hospital and Fletcher Elementary School.
Workers widening and removing tight curves from the road noticed the water was undermining it and took action. They say an old pipe rusted out in the drainage system, allowing floodwaters from downpours Tuesday night to undermine the road.
The downpours also chopped up a private driveway and isolated two homes near Fletcher. A small creek ripped a hole nearly 10 feet deep and 18 feet wide on Misty Rose Lane in Fletcher. That isolated a homeowner’s car and has forced him to walk through neighbors’ yards to get to his house. Repairs could cost more than $10,000 because city and state workers can’t work on private roads.
