Cops: Thief Crushed Under Stolen Car
A car crash victim was airlifted to Mission Hospital Tuesday afternoon, but not for injuries suffered during the wreck.
State troopers said Derrick White of Asheville was actually a drunk driver who stole his sister's Toyota. The free ride ended in a sharp curve along Garren Creek Road in Fairview.
The loud crash jolted Charles Moore off his sofa.
"I just heard a loud bang. It sounded like a gun or something went off," Moore said. "I was sitting watching Barney Fife on TV and heard it in the house."
Another neighbor told News 13's Mario Boone the stretch of road where the crash happened is like a speedway.
"It's as dangerous as Charlotte Highway," said Anita Michal.
But the story gets even more bizarre. Troopers said White tried hiding under the car when another motorist stopped to help. The good samaritan sat in the wrecked car to turn off the engine, causing it to collapse on top of White.
White's condition was not known late Tuesday evening. Criminal charges are pending in this case.
