Macon County’s airport gets a federal grant to upgrade its runway. Airport officials say they're seeing about twice as many planes using the airport, many travelers heading to the casino in Cherokee and to Highlands and Cashiers. The $2.8 million grant will be used to repave and widen the runway by 25 feet. Airport Manager Neil Hoppe says that will provide a better safety margin.
“Now the more attractive we can make the airport, safety-wise, to attract more business. That's a win-win situation.”
Last year, the runway was extended by 600 feet.
