Officer Charged in Wreck
Troopers charge an Asheville Police Officer with running a red light and causing an accident. It happened last Thursday at the intersection of Mills Gap and Sweeten Creek Roads.
Troopers say officer Brian Hogan failed to stop for the red light and hit a car driven by Helen Rice. Rice was taken to the hospital. Hogan was not injured. Troopers say he struck the left front of her vehicle, forcing it off the road and into some trees.
Troopers say Hogan was on duty and driving a vehicle that belongs to the county. Sheriff's deputies say Hogan is a member of the Buncombe County Anti-Crime Task Force. Troopers say he was conducting surveillance at the time of the collision, which may have distracted him from seeing the red light. They say this was a low-speed accident, with Hogan traveling 25 mph and Rice 35 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Asheville Police Department says Hogan will remain on the job while they conduct an internal investigation.
