WNC Weather Stations Installed
Three weather stations are being installed in McDowell County.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration just put one in on a rented swatch of the McDowell Tecnhical Community College Campus.
The stations are equipped with Doppler radar, wind and rain gauges that will draw data to be used by NOAA to develop more accurate forecasts for the area.
"In the winter, when two or three degrees can mean the difference in whether your students are home at a safe time ... it makes a big difference," said McDowell Tech's Michael Lavender.
Previously, there were no weather stations in the county and forecasts were drawn from either Hickory or Asheville readers, depending on the end of the county.
There is second station installed at the Fish Hatchery in Marion, the third one will go in at the EMS base station in Old Fort by the end of the month.
