NC Salmonella Outbreak

(AP) -- Health officials are looking into a salmonella outbreak they say stemmed a church barbeque dinner more than a week ago.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services says the fundraising dinner was held on Sept. 7 at the Sandy Plains Baptist Church in Shelby.

As of Tuesday, nine cases had been confirmed and five people have been hospitalized.

The Cleveland County and Rutherford County Health Departments have joined the state health agency in an investigation into the outbreak.

Officials say those people who attended the dinner and became ill with intestinal symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting should consult their health care provider and inform them about being exposure at this event.

In addition, people who bought food at the dinner and brought it home should throw it out.
