Marion Well Survey
Some Marion homeowners are surprised about oil contamination in their neighborhood. They received a letter about an oil spill within a few blocks of their property. It also included a form asking if they used well water. That's because oil had leaked out of an old underground tank buried in front of a dentist's office.
Dr. Haskell Mills decided to remove it and when the company that dug it up found the leak, they were required to notify state environmental officials. He says contractors removed truck loads of dirt, installed a monitoring well and are taking water samples. Mills says he hopes a state environmental fund will reimburse him for the $20,000 he has spent on the removal. He says most of the homeowners nearby use the city water supply.
State environmental officials say this is becoming a routine procedure for people selling property with underground storage tanks.
