School Given Low Ranking
An online publication ranks McDowell High School as the 17th worst public school in the nation.
The North Carolina school report card shows most freshmen at McDowell High School are below grade level in English and Algebra.
School officials say the website data company is wrong and the state report card doesn't show complete test scores.
A 2001 graduate of McDowell High says he was looking for his school's ranking on the internet when he came across the Worst Public Schools site. Its posted on a community report and location analysis website called NeighborhoodScout.com. Wesley Parker also wanted to know why freshmen scores were so low. He says something needs to change at the school and the county needs to get involved in improving grades.
School officials say the figures don't show the reason the North Carolina school report card ranking is so low. They say only a handful of freshmen attend McDowell High. Most 9th graders attend the junior high school in the McDowell School system. Officials say the ranking will improve when 400 freshmen begin attending the high school next year. School officials say the McDowell district scores are higher than the state average.
