Football Star Killed In Wreck
Family members mourn over the sudden loss of a 21-year-old Rutherford County man.
Dache Gossett died in a car accident off Old Henrietta Road over the weekend. Dache and two former Chase High football players were in an SUV when it hydroplaned, flipped and struck a power pole Saturday. Dache died at the scene.
The young man graduated from Chase High School in 2010, where he was a star football player and homecoming king. Family and friends describe the young man as joyful, loyal and always sporting a smile. The sudden death has brought a wave of support from the Chase community, a reminder of the deep impression Dache left on those around him. Those close to the young man are trying to cope with the loss.
"All the memories I have he was either there, on vacations or peewee," says Ty Barber, victims cousin. "He was either there or he knows about them. I talk to him tell him everything, it's going to be hard to get on without him."
Passenger Carlos Watkins, a sophomore defensive tackle for Clemson University, suffered a leg injury. Family members say he should be released from the hospital today. 19-year-old Tajae McMullens was driving the vehicle. McMullens was one of Dache's best friends. He was not injured.
Investigators say neither speed, alcohol, nor drugs were factors in the crash. It is suspected heavy rain was to blame. Still, charges could be filed.
A memorial service for Dache will be held this Saturday, with a visitation beginning at noon at New Bethal AME Zion church.
