Renovation Cost Concerns
A $3.5 million upgrade of Hendersonville's historic downtown is getting lots of raves. But some local residents are criticizing Council's decision to sign off on a $183,000 fountain sculpture as part of the downtown plan.
The fountain is called "Mountain Memories" by Asheville artist Berry Bate. It's meant to illustrate Mount Pisgah, two other local peaks and rivers including the French Broad. While some question the cost, Hendersonville City Manager John Conett pointed out it's a small percentage of the $3.5 million upgrades.
Final work is being done to the north end of Main Street, but city officials say downtown property owners are also now doing upgrades to the tune of about $750,000 Conett said, so far.
