Search for Missing Hikers
Just after 6pm Sunday, Henderson County rescue crews and deputies found hikers Jonathan Heatherly, 32, and Janice Collins, 56, in the rugged Green River Game lands area outside of Dana. The two were found screaming for help from a ravine they'd fallen into after leaving for a hike Saturday 3pm.
"He said he could hardly talk," said Kathy Heatherly, Jonathan's Aunt. "I said you need to tell everybody thank you. And he said, tell them thank you."
"The hikers evidently heard the rescuers and started calling out for help," said Lowell Griffin, with Henderson County's Sheriffs department. " It's such a remote area we had limited phone access."
Griffin said there were more than 90 rescue members from area agencies including scent dogs to track the hikers. Both hikers were found in good shape but had walked off the regular trail on Laurel Mountain about five miles from where they began their hike.
