ConMet Plant Expansion
Canton's Consolidated Metco is expanding. The plant makes parts for the cabs of tractor trailers. It already employs 370 and the plant manager says based on growth over recent years, it's expanding and will hire even more.
"We're adding over the next three months roughly 30 employees. Hopefully by the end of 2014 somewhere around 80 employees," said Nate Dingus.
Dingus says a $5.9 million expansion is under way, including an additional 150,000 square feet.
Haywood County is helping by gifting 8 acres to ConMet as long as it adds those jobs.
Mark Clasby with the Economic Development Commission says the county is also giving ConMet temporary use of 10 acres to use as it expands. He says advanced manufacturing is making a comeback.
"Where we've really been successful recently is working with existing businesses as the economy slowly improves," said Clasby.
Dingus says he'll be looking to hire people for everything from general production work to management positions. ConMet operates a sister plant in Bryson City.
