Henderson Co. Rape Case On Dr. Phil
Former East Henderson High football player Matt Bishop, 17, and his parents decided to take their plea of innocence to the national airwaves Wednesday by appearing on the Dr. Phil show. Bishop is facing 2nd degree rape charges after an alleged rape of a classmate last year at a party. Three other teens are also charged in the case but Bishop is the only one so far who's speaking publicly. On the show Bishop told Dr. Phil
"I had consensual sex with a girl and she wanted to." He went onto say that while both he and the girl were drinking it was she, he said, who asked him to have sex.
"She took me downstairs ," Bishop said on Dr. Phil, and "started to unbutton my pants and then that's when we started having sex." He said it lasted about thirty minutes. Bishop then said the alleged victim continued to want to have sex but that he couldn't perform. Bishop said he then went to tell his three other friends at the house who proceeded he said to have sex with the alleged victim with her consent.
He added, "when each of us had sex with her it was only one person at a time."
The alleged victim appeared at the end of the show and said she had been drinking and was going in and out of consciousness during the alleged rapes.
"One of them was carrying me upstairs and put me on Matt's lap," she said. "And they were unbuckling my pants and shirt. And I told them I was going to go downstairs. I ended up on the groundThey kind of started taking off my clothes off again. I don't remember initiating anything," said the alleged victim.
She admitted to Dr. Phil she had had past sexual relations with Matt Bishop but that it was purely physical and that she was actually interested in the other alleged rapist Tyler Garren.
"I was there for Tyler," said the alleged victim. But she said Garren told her at the party that he was going to have sex with another girl in the shower and planned to make the alleged victim watch.
"I was pissed and that was the only reason I started drinking," she said.
In Hendersonville opinions on the case are mixed.
"I think it could destroy the rest of their lives for a poor decision they made whether it was consensual or not," said Allison Ride, Arden.
"As a parent, if you don't have a parent there to direct them be a part of their life and what's going on," said Larry Keith, Hendersonville.
"The girl I think is exploiting all this," said Marci Overstreet. "I think to get more attention on her side but the boy he was a star athlete and now he has nothing now. Maybe he can prove his point in a way that will help him out." The Dr. Phil show will have a second show on the case Friday. Currently there is no trial date set for the case in Henderson County.
