Town Employees Suspended
Two Maggie Valley leaders face discipline following controversy over a country music concert at the town's festival grounds.
Maggie Valley's board of alderman met last night, and after a closed-door session, festival director Audrey Hager and town manager Tim Barth were both suspended with pay. That remains their status until the board addresses the issue again next Wednesday.
The controversy centers on Hager applying for a liquor license for the Matt Stillwell concert in August on behalf of promoter and local restaurant owner Charlie Meadows. When it was turned down by the ABC commission, Tim Barth says the town had to take over in order to have as-advertised alcohol at the concert.
But town leaders say they didn't know about this and the town fronting money to a private organizer, and Meadows agreeing to repay costs. The concert lost money. Meadows signed a contract saying he'd cover the costs. He's also running for town alderman.
Current board members are looking into the accounting of all this. They'll meet again at 6 p.m. next Wednesday looking for final resolution in regard to Hager and Barth.
