Mountain Mom's Son Was At Navy Yard
The Navy Yard tragedy that left 12 victims dead hits close to home for one mountain mom.
The Transylvania County woman says her son was on the third floor during the killing spree.
"You don't realize how close it is," says Denise Daniels of Penrose. "It's a harrowing experience. I have a moment of silence, I say oh my gosh it could have been him. "
Brett Daniels was on the third floor, working on the design of a navy ship. Alarmingly near the mayhem.
"At first I just thought it was a fire drill," Brett told News 13 by phone. "Then a couple of my co-workers relayed that there were gunshots and it's not a drill."
In the days since, he's exchanged emails with his mom that reveal even more layers to the story.
"And this morning i sent him a big email about what he means to me," Denise says. "You don't say these things often enough. You say 'I love you'. You don't realize it could be the last time you talk to them. I'm getting emotional now."
"We take life for granted," Brett says. "And I see emails like that from my mom."
