Fort Bragg Soldier Deployment
About 600 North Carolina troops will be heading to Afghanistan. Members of the 18th Airborne Corps and the 82nd Sustainment Brigade from Fort Bragg will deploy early next year.
The pentagon says their mission will be part of a regular rotation to help train and assist Afghan forces.
They will also help draw down American presence in Afghanistan. It is a familiar mission, back in 2011, Bragg soldiers helped lead the shutdown of the war zone in Iraq.
Col. Kevin Arata, 18th Airborne Corp Spokesman, "we have allot of equipment there. Allot of things to move. The difference is going to be in this case, there were different ways we have to move things in Iraq. We had a port where we could get equipment out. We don't have that luxury in Afghanistan, so there is more of a challenge."
Deployment should begin in January for the 9 month mission.
By late winter, the 62,000 American troops in Afghanistan will be reduced by half.
