Pipe Bomb Arrest
Waynesville Police make a routine stop and discover a pipe bomb leading to an arrest. 37-year-old John Cathy of Canton faces felony charges of possessing and transporting a weapon of mass destruction.
An officer stopped to check on Cathy's white pickup truck, which was parked along Old Asheville Highway Sunday morning. Currently it's in the impound yard.
According to the police report, Cathy said he had run out of gas. But based on his behavior, the officer suspected Cathy of being on drugs. Police say after they received consent to search the truck, they found a pipe bomb inside. When questioned, they say Cathy gave conflicting stories about where it came from.
"Really no motive on why he had the device at this time. Never did give any indication on why he had the pipe bomb in the first place," said Waynesville Police Chief Bill Hollingsed.
Hollingsed says a bomb squad removed the bomb, closed the road, and detonated it safely. He says this is an example of how something that appears to be routine, can turn dangerous in a moment and he credits good police work for defusing a potentially serious situation.
Cathy posted a $30,000 bond. His court date is scheduled for September 11th.
