Special Report: Painful Road To Recovery

Two years after the accident that nearly took her life, Sharon Lovelace remains on the painful path to recovery.

"You've lost part of yourself," Lovelace says. "And I'm slowly getting back there."

In December of 2011, just before Christmas, she was behind the wheel of a church van with 14 passengers on 64 in Transylvania County. Suddenly, an oncoming truck swerves in her direction.

That's when Sharon makes a split second decision to turn the vehicle away from that truck. Some consider her a hero for taking the brunt of the impact, especially considering there were six kids on board.

Sharon suffered broken bones, broken hips, and a broken arm. Almost miraculously, no one was killed in the wreckage.

"You don't ever stop thinking about it because it changed my life so much," Lovelace tells us. She thinks she was an instrument of God that day and made the right move.

"I would much rather myself be in this position than one of the kids or one of my friends that had gotten bad hurt," she says. "I wouldn't have been able to live with myself."

23 months after that wreck, physical rehabilitation is part of her regimen. Meanwhile, the emotional recovery is still a work in progress.

Sharon says it's no accident, she was there for that moment of divine intervention. Now, she hopes to set an example by overcoming her injuries. According to Lovelace, it's just another obstacle.

"It's a detour and everyone stresses out over detours."
