Child Death Investigation
More severe charges could be filed against the father of a 4 year-old fatally injured in a Jackson County motel room. 23 year-old Eric Davis is charged with felony child abuse. His daughter, Erica Davis, was found unresponsive inside their room at the Qualla Motel in Whittier, Friday morning. She died at Mission Hospital on Saturday.
Davis' arrest warrant shows his daughter suffered multiple bruising, a broken pelvis, and trauma to the head.
The motel's manager says the incident is surprising. Larry Gailey says Davis and his family had been at his motel for about a month and were quiet, always paying for their room on time. He says when all the commotion happened Friday morning he went and talked to Davis. He just said that he turned around and the little girl was on the floor. He didn't know what was wrong with her, says Gailey.
A nurse staying in a nearby room tried to help the little girl. The nurse's husband called 911 for help. A call then went to Jackson County Communications for an ambulance. The operator said about the call from the nurse's husband, "he said there's a 4-5 year old , choking incident. His wife is an R.N. and she's with her now. She does have a heart rate, not responsive, but she's breathing."
Gailey says the little girl was at the motel with her father and her younger brother. Authorities say additional charges could be filed against Davis after an autopsy is completed on his daughter. He remains in the Jackson County jail under $1,000,000 bond.
Erica Davis' mother, Billie Jo Brown, says she's on her way to the area to meet with investigators. Eric Davis has a court date scheduled for October 29th.
