Campers Kicked Out
Campers in U.S. Forest Service campgrounds are told to pack up and leave by noon Saturday because of the government shutdown. The U.S. Forest Service made a decision to close all of its campgrounds. That includes the Davidson River Campground near Brevard.
The closure means about 60 members of the Long family reunion will have to pack up and leave. Because of the size of this group, they gave up looking for a mountain campsite and most will return to Greenville.
But another couple found a private campground nearby, and began setting up camp not far away from Dupont State Forest. The visitor center there and in other state parks and forests will remain open despite the shutdowns. Supervisors say the centers bathrooms and shelters remain open from sunrise to sunset. They say they're prepared to handle crowds of tourists this weekend, who may have canceled trips to the national parks, which closed facilities three days ago.
