What's Open on the Parkway

Reports that the federal shutdown has closed facilities on the Blue Ridge Parkway, have some tourists wondering if the road itself is open.

The road is open, but workers at resorts along the Parkway say they're taking more than 30 calls a day from people wondering whether to cancel reservations.

The staff at Switzerland Inn, near Spruce Pine, are telling people they are open and there are plenty of attractions that are welcoming tourists along the road.

They suggest the Mount Mitchell State Park, Grandfather Mountain, and the popular historic orchard at Altapass, which are all open for business. Federal facilities, including popular Linville Falls are closed because of the shutdown.
