APD Officer Killed
Asheville Police Chief William Anderson says Officer Rob Bingaman died after an accident this afternoon. His cruiser plunged from the Jeff Bowen Bridge in West Asheville and landed along Riverside Drive around 1pm. Senior Officer Robert Bingaman was 37 years old and had been with the department for 6 years.
In a news conference at 4:30pm from City Hall, Chief William Anderson said, "Our prayers and deepest condolences are with Officer Bingaman and his family." He said Officer Bingaman was a great guy who did his job and served his community.
Two westbound lanes of I-240 are currently closed. A witness tells News 13 the cruiser appeared to be going at a high rate of speed and was not using lights or siren. Firefighters say it took them awhile to stabilize the the vehicle. They had to strap the back end of the vehicle to the piling of the bridge.
About 1:30pm, News 13's Frank Fraboni reported rescue workers were extricating the person inside the vehicle.
