Girl Sent Home From School Without Pants
An Asheville mother says her young daughter was sent home from Johnston Elementary School wearing a shirt but no pants.
Shonda Jackson says her 6-year-old daughter wet her pants twice during the school day last Friday. Jackson says instead of contacting her, the school dressed her daughter in a toddler-sized dress and underwear. Jackson says the dress barely covered her daughter's backside and she was exposed throughout the school day.
Jackson says her daughter also has eczema and her skin was rubbed raw after being exposed to the elements. Jackson says she called the school when she picked her daughter up from the bus stop and saw what she was wearing. Jackson says the school told her they thought the outfit was appropriate.
Buncombe County Schools sent WLOS a statement:
"To avoid embarrassing a child, and to keep the child involved in classroom instruction, the teacher in this case a substitute teacher--tries to take care of it quietly, utilizing spare clothes from a clothes closet. When it happened the first time that morning clean pants and underwear were provided. The second time, in the afternoon, there were no pants to fit the child so a clean dress and clean underwear were used. The principal was at a conference that day, but readily apologized to the parent when told the second change of clothes was unacceptable."
