Spindale Murder Arrest
A suspect in a Spindale murder is now behind bars. Police have charged 19-year-old Dedrick Washington of Shelby in the shooting death of 43-year-old Jeffrey Lee James.
Authorities say James was working as a bouncer at the Mingle City Sports Bar last Saturday when a fight broke out. As the altercation inside the club became physical, James along with other security personnel began to take control of the situation. A short time later, those involved had been removed and taken outside. Police say at that point, a young man involved in the fight went to a vehicle, retrieved a handgun from the trunk and began walking back towards the building.
James, who was still outside the front door, saw his assailant approaching. Police say he began moving patrons back into the bar through the front door out of harms way. He did not allow others to exit the building into the line of fire. The assailant began firing ultimately expending at least eight rounds towards James and the establishment. James was struck once in the neck fatally wounding him.
Police say without the heroic actions of Jeffrey Lee James, many more individuals would have been injured or killed.
Washington was arrested Thursday night during a traffic stop. He is in the Rutherford County Jail.
