Student Attacked by Classmate
A Madison County mother is upset after her son was attacked in a school bathroom. She says the punishment for the student who attacked him isn't enough.
The boy who attacked her son was arrested and charged with simple assault, but the mother says his discipline at school was just a slap on the wrist.
The student was attacked around noon Monday in a bathroom at Madison High School.
"My son could have died in that bathroom, he was being choked and beaten with him unconscious."
Delta Walsh shared a photograph of her son Robbie McConnel's injuries, which included three stitches to his face. She says he was attacked from behind and had no idea what hit him.
Delta Walsh, victim's mother, "I just think that it's real sad that he can't even go to school without something like this happening."
A school resource officer stopped the attack, arrested a 17-year-old student and charged him with simple assault.
The school's principal Steve Bowlin says "it's under investigation to see if there was a bullying issue." He also added, "both students have spotless records."
Walsh says her son has no idea why he was attacked, "He was quite shocked, because they had never had any issue."
Walsh says she doesn't believe her son did anything to deserve the beating and the five day suspension she says his attacker received isn't enough.
"Well, I think in any other county in this state that child would not be allowed to return back to this school. They would be going to an alternative school."
School officials wouldn't comment on the student's, discipline saying it was confidential.
He was released on a $500 bond and is due in court November 21st.
