Local Father Crafts Invention
A Forest City man has gotten a patent on the first ever solar-powered newspaper box.
Leon Boykins Jr. said the box will will be equipped with an LCD screen, a wireless alert system and will be unique in the way it dispenses a single newspaper at a time in order to prevent thefts that can occur with current newspapers boxes.
Boykins says, like a soda machine, you would insert a coin and one paper would be dispensed, which would replace the current system, in which the front door of the box comes down which could allow patrons to take multiple copies after only paying for one.
The 25-year-old got the idea in 2011 and he says he's now obtained a patent and the prototype is currently being designed.
Boykins is a single father and he said he pursued this invention for his daughter and for his community - he says his idea could create local jobs.
