Preparing for Icy Roads

With freezing conditions headed our way highway crews are getting ready to give drivers more traction on icy highways.

The crews will start work this afternoon, they plan to pre-treat the roads with salt water to give drivers the edge when the ice storm arrives.

Road crews began loading snowplows with salt and sand this morning.  They mix the two materials with front-end loaders to evenly distribute the traction materials.

Maintenance workers also prepared the hoses that will fill tankers with brine, that will pre-treat dry highways and roads later today.

Chad Bandy, NCDOT district engineer, "what happens is when the water goes out over the road, then the water leaves a film of salt on the roadway, and the same thing happens to a car if it gets too close, it gets sprayed with the salt water, it dries and leaves a film of salt over the windshield, over the entire car for that matter."

Coming up later today, how that brine gives these crews an edge so all of us can stay on the road.
