Initial Investigation into Bingaman Crash
The N.C. Highway Patrol has released its completed initial investigation in the death of an Asheville Police Officer.
Officer Robert Bingaman died after his patrol car plunged off the Captain Jeff Bowen Bridge on October 29th.
According to the investigation, Officer Bingaman was traveling around 70 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone on I-240 westbound approaching the Jeff Bowen Bridge.
Officer Bingaman swerved left to avoid traffic and struck the guardrail. The impact caused the vehicle to rotate counterclockwise onto the guardrail.
Officer Bingaman's vehicle then rolled over the guardrail and subsequently struck the ground below. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.
