Arrest Made In Double Homicide
News 13 has learned the man charged with murdering his own mother and step-father was arrested just three weeks ago for a stabbing at the Econo Lodge on Tunnel Road.
Vincent Thomas Wesley Franklin, 25 will go before a judge Thursday morning for his initial appearance. Franklin has been charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Franklin is the son and step-son of the two victims.
Deputies say 45 year-old Joy Runne and 44 year-old Andre Runne died from gunshot wounds. Their bodies where discovered at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at their home on James Drive in the Leicester community.
"We had a family member that came to James Drive to check on some family people, and found two deceased people there at the residence. The Sheriff's Office responded, we determined pretty quickly that this was a homicide, and we also had a vehicle missing from the residence," said Sheriff Van Duncan.A short time later, deputies found a truck that had been taken from the residence.
Franklin was also charged in a stabbing at the Econo Lodge on Tunnel Road in Asheville. Franklin was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and reckless driving. Two people were wounded. Franklin himself was also stabbed and was later arrested after crashing his car into a utility pole on Patton Avenue. Police say he admitted to drug use, but they have not released a motive for the stabbing.
Joy Runne worked as the manager of the Waffle House on Tunnel Road for nearly 20 years. Employees at the restaurant were so upset about the news, many of them went home Wednesday after learning she had been murdered. One employee called her the best boss he had ever had.
The Waffle House issued the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the news of Joy Jensen. She was a beloved member of the Waffle House family for nearly 20 years and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this difficult time. "
People following the story in Leicester realize the consequences of a double murder charge.
"When you do something like that you will stay in prison for the rest of your life," said Cody Garrett, who works at a Leicester convenience store.
Leicester residents say they've heard through friends how the victims were found.
"They said the dad was in the bedroom and the mother was actually in the yard," said Sharon Anders of Leicester.
"Mr. Franklin does have a fairly extensive record," said Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan. "He is right now out on assault with a deadly weapons charge."
The Sheriff wouldn't provide additional details, but said the murder investigation is ongoing and could become even more complex in the days to come.
Sharon Anders said she can't fathom what would cause a son to kill his own mother.
"Not unless it was drugs or maybe he's stealing to get money for drugs," said Anders.
Franklin, who is being held without bond, is also facing robbery charges in connection to the murder.
"I really don't know what would possess someone to kill their own mother," said Anders. "That's horrible."
