Football Coach Honored
A local football coach battling cancer is honored tonight by his former players. A group of Charlie Metcalf's former players at Erwin High surprised the Asheville coach at half time. They say it's was a small way to show him just how much they appreciate him.
Coach Metcalf has been coaching football for 36 years now. For several of those years he coached players in the Erwin Youth League and at Erwin High. His former players say he showed them what it took to be a winner on the field and in life. He continues to set an example for them as he battles cancer.
Charlie Metcalf has stage 3 non-hodgkin's lymphoma and is undergoing chemo now.
His former players tell News 13 although he is coaching at Asheville High, he still is and will always remain a big part of their community.
