Circovirus Killing Dogs Across The Country
Concern is growing about a virus that can kill dogs in a matter of days. It's called circovirus. Though it's been around for about 30 years, it's only affected pigs and birds. Recently, four dogs showed symptoms of the virus in Cincinnati, Ohio. Other cases have been reported in Michigan and California. Those symptoms include bloody vomit and diarrhea.
"They get very sick, very dehydrated. Their lymph nodes can be swollen. Some dogs actually have had some respiratory problems, too. And it was highly fatal in a number of dogs that had been diagnosed with it," said Dr. Mark Wysocki of Avery Creek Pet Hospital.
Doctor Wysocki also says it's important to note that no cases have been reported in North Carolina. He also says the symptoms are similar to other viruses and if pet owners see such symptoms, they should take their dog to the vet immediately.
